Well I thought we were seeing a Spring coming to us.
We got a few nice days and we all thought winter was on its way out.
Lots of laughs to that.
But I did get a chance to catch the first flowers I have seen outside in a long time.
The Witch Hazel was blooming.
I found the orange- red prettier than the yellow but the poor yellow bush looks like it needs some TLC so may have been reflected in the flowers.
The genus name 'Hamamelis" means "together with fruit".
Witch Hazel shrubs can tolerate an area that gets salt/ice/snow so this is beneficial in the landscape where the salt trucks maybe dumping salt.
The North American witch hazel shrub can produce an astringent used for sores, bruises and swelling you can visit www.wisebread.com/15-wonderful-uses-for-witch-hazel for some great uses. Have a wonderful day.

The witch hazel is pretty. Lovely images. Enjoy your new week, Happy March!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a witch hazel plant/bush - this is very interesting. The color adds a lot to a drab winter landscape. Here's hoping spring comes soon.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, how do you see witch hazel where you are?
DeleteWhat a great glimpse of spring, I love that color! I had taken lots photos of one of these in a public garden here in New Zealand, but didn't know what it was until a few months ago!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a lot of people didn't really realize this, I just discovered it just a few years ago.
DeleteHi Cathy,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of witch hazel, which I have never seen before, although I do know of its therapeutic qualities. Lovely colour and shape of the petals, which I find quite intriguing!
Have a lovely week!

Thanks, I have found this plant quite interesting. It's the only life in the plant world I am seeing anywhere right now with the weather being so cold. Oh maybe a few weeds coming up in the garden. Of course!
DeleteThanks for visiting and commenting on my blog and congratulations on what looks like a brand new blog! I don’t use Google + but if you add a ‘Google Followers’ to your layout I will become a follower :-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful witch hazel, thanks for sharing.
Thanks that is very sweet. I am new and still trying to figure everything out. Wish I had more time to spend playing.
Deleteoh to just see something green. When when when will it stop snowing. Lovely to look at your pictures. Thank you for a glimpse of Spring

I think that's why I look for the witch hazel to bloom. Just any sign of spring.
DeleteI'd love to see something blooming! I've never seen witch hazel growing before, at least not that I know of! It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI don't think we realize, because it's so small and with winter, it's actually a flower until you really look for it. But now that I have discovered it, I look for it every year. Can't wait for the other flowers to start blooming. It's been a long winter.
